Narrowing Down Our Lens

On January 20th, the Youth Leadership Council determined which organizations focused on teen mental health that they were interested in meeting. Since all organizations aid teens suffering from mental health issues, Youth Justice Council members narrowed down their choices by establishing the strengths and weaknesses of each organization with focuses on financial status, academics, visual performing arts, professional help, volunteer opportunities, and most importantly, youth impact. Members were very focused on finding an organization that works around the clock to impact youths and teens positively. Additionally, members wanted an organization that would allow them to volunteer to gain firsthand experience with the youth in the programs.

After completing their research, the Youth Leadership Council chose the David Lynch Foundation, P.S. Arts, and WIN LA. The criteria for these three organizations are shown below.

David Lynch Foundation

Strengths:

  • Serves 2,500 kids in 7 schools
  • $800K budget just in LA = 4 programs
  • $250/ month per kid, considering $180 for licensing fee
  • Central focus is on mental health in Los Angeles.
    • TM: Meditation for different mindset
    • Work with veterans & soldiers
    • Focus on trying to expand into more public schools.

Weaknesses: The impact may not have a greater effect since the foundation already has various locations. Might consider focusing on one program offered or establishing the program in a new school.

P.S. Arts

  • Serve from K-6. Serve about 25K
  • Budget consists of 42M
  • $80-$100K
  • 40% comes from the foundation itself & 30% comes from the LAUSD District
  • Programs include:
    • Family Night
    • Theater (Performing Arts merged 2 years ago with the foundation)
    • School Program that focuses on tutoring and academic opportunities for students to excel

Win LA

Discussed on the matters that the program does not allow a volunteers opportunity. Extensive evaluation should be considered.
